WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT GOATS?

Goats were one of the first animals domesticated by man over 9,000 years ago. A goat has also been used in many myths and legends and it was considered the symbol of vitality, sensuality and health. Today we know that goats are very affectionate, loyal, intelligent, curious, and loving creatures not to mention they are wonderful producers of fabulous milk as well as hours of entertainment.

FARM JOBS FOR THE GOATS

The goats on the Country Goods farm have several jobs to do each day and provide a variety of benefits. They also add fun to the farm with their silly little antics.
Our Goats EAT
As in, everything in sight. The best part is that they will eat all of the
pesky, unwanted weeds we get on the farm which allows us to avoid
harmful herbicides.
Our Goats Fertilize
Goat manure is an excellent fertilizer for Jilly’s Garden. It is rich in
nitrogen and phosphate, making it perfect for growing vegetables.
Our Goats Produce Milk and Cheese
Our dairy goats provide a healthy supply of milk in the Spring through the Fall. We choose to only have one kidding season per year and it usually happens in May or June. This allows us to replenish our milk reserves so we can make more soap and cheese. We also get the added benefit of enjoying their cute babies.
Our Goats Make Great Companions
Goats are gentle, loyal, caring and playful. Our goats are all hand fed and some are bottle raised. This makes for a unique goat experience because they often behave similarly to a dog. Speaking of dogs, our farm labs Dagger and Maggie are often found playing with the goats in pasture.

MAMA TITTIE: The Boss Goat

Mama Tittie is an American Lamancha goat which is the only breed of goat developed in the United States. As a dairy goat, Lamancha’s are known for their high milk production and excellent temperament. Their milks is also relatively high in butterfat content, coming in at 4.2% fat.

Mamma Tittie is the “boss goat” on the farm. She was raised on a bottle by our own “Country Maker” Sarah and often accompanied her to school. She is a kind and gentle goat but she is clearly the boss of the pasture.

Mamma has one kid each Spring which we will showcase on our Facebook and Instagram.

SWEET BEBE

Bebe is a Nigerian Dwarf goat. One Nigerian Dwarf goat produces a surprising amount of milk and is essentially a miniature dairy goat. When milking, they produce between three and four pounds of 6% to 10% butterfat milk per day.

Bebe is a sweet, shy goat who can be very loud. She is bonded with our Nigerian wether, Bullet and they are often seen “palling around”.

She came to the farm just under 1 year old in 2018 and is currently expecting her first kid early Summer of 2020 which we will showcase on our Facebook and Instagram.

THE REST OF THE GANG

We have a variety of goats on the farm, each having a different job to do. We currently have Lamancha, Alpine, Boer and Nigerian Dwarfs. Follow us on Facebook  or Instagram for the most up-to-date goat news.

DIGESTIVE BENEFITS

REDUCED LACTOSE

Goats’ milk contains less lactose than cows’ milk. This may explain why some people who experience sensitivity to lactose are able to enjoy goats’ milk without any repercussions. However, do consult your GP or a health professional before making any changes to your diet.

CALCIUM BOOST

Three servings of goats’ milk or goats’ milk cheese can provide more than 100% of an adult’s daily needs of calcium. Calcium is essential for the development and maintenance of bones and teeth, and helps the body to produce energy.
